The Sierra Study Club consists of a group of hygienists in the Sonora, CA area affiliated with the California Dental Hygienists’ Association. The club provides excellent educational opportunities for local dental professionals; enabling them to earn Continuing Education units without having to travel out of town.

We appreciated the opportunity to raise diabetes awareness reviewing the vital correlation between diabetes and oral health. Another goal was to equip the entire team with the tools to address the unique needs of the diabetic dental patient in a practical way.

Many thanks to the Sierra Study Club for inviting us to present our program!

Sincerely,

Dear Dr. and Team,

Well, theDiabetic Encounter has encountered some excellent experiences this last year meeting great Dental Care Teams. We as diabetic dental patients are grateful to know that you are concerned and prepared to help provide us with head to toe health…

We were also privileged to speak to second year students at the UOP Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco. WOW – do our future DDSs look young! (or am I just getting old?!) Anyway…….The school is a beautiful facility and we were able to meet some nice folks.

The BG Bulletin is designed to provide you with some tidbits of interesting information about diabetes. Our goal is to chip away at that steep learning curve of awareness by raising and promoting diabetes awareness.

Many thanks for inviting us into your office.

Sincerely,
Connie

How Does a Glucometer Work?

Two pieces of equipment are needed to take a blood glucose (BG) reading: a glucometer and a test strip.

The test strips are designed to pick up a consistent amount of blood for the glucose meter to read. A drop of blood touched to the very end of the strip is sipped up by the strip by what is called capillary action. Capillary action occurs when a liquid can spontaneously travel up a thin tube without energy being required.

There are two different ways in which a glucometer can measure the amount of glucose in the blood; both using enzymes in the strips that cause a chemical reaction with the glucose in the blood.

The chemical reaction:

1. Creates a color change. The glucometer measures and reads the glucose concentration in milligrams/deciliter.

OR

2. Causes a small amount of electricity to be produced which the glucometer then translates into the blood glucose reading.

WOW! Pacific Grove? Pacific Ocean? Dental? When we learned of this event to be taking place in one of our favorite places, we jumped at the chance to attend………..!

We had the privilege of attending the UOP Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry Asilomar Alumni Reunion in February. The campus is located in San Francisco and plans a weekend retreat in beautiful Pacific Grove yearly for two alumni classes and its current graduating class. This year it was attended by the class of 1989 (20 year reunion), the class of 2004 (5 year reunion), and the 2009 graduating class. The weekend provided previous classmates a few days to catch up on old and new times and the graduating class time to relax before the rigors of graduation. A family-like atmosphere was created by the faculty, alumni and graduates during the activities which included speeches, slide shows, entertainment, displayed student projects, and exhibitors.

THAT’S WHERE theDIABETIC ENCOUNTER came in. We set up our booth along with other exhibitors and enjoyed a busy, productive evening introducing our program and products. We are definitely passionate about diabetes awareness so had a great time talking to those who came by our booth. MANY THANKS TO ALL………We look forward to next year.
